A fluorescent blue cast in Brazilian waters stunned a canoeing team on Wednesday (26) when rowers discovered an underwater glowing light in the sea of southern Florianopolis in Santa Catarina.
The bioluminescence phenomenon is caused by phytoplankton microalgae. The tiny cells flash when they’re disturbed by waves or currents and scientists believe it’s a self-protecting mechanism. The luminous light show used to take place during calm and warm water seasons.
