Brazil is set to experience a record-breaking influx of international tourists during the summer of 2025, with the city of Rio de Janeiro as the focal point of this historic surge. According to the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion (Embratur), the country will see an unprecedented availability of 4.5 million airline seats on international flights to Brazil between January and March—marking the highest figure ever recorded.

Spotlight on South America

The rise in international tourism is being driven significantly by South American travelers. Argentina leads the charge, with an increase of 106,000 additional seats, followed by Chile (83,000) and Uruguay (21,000). This marks a major boost for connections between neighboring countries and Brazil, facilitating easier access for travelers eager to explore the country’s rich culture, natural wonders, and tropical summer.

Record Expectations for Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, one of Brazil’s most iconic cities, is expected to welcome 991,000 international passengers between January and March 2025. This figure represents a 26% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels, with an additional 204,000 visitors anticipated.

To accommodate this surge, Rio will see 68 extra weekly flights from South America alone, alongside nine additional flights from the United States, eight from Europe, and one from Asia. The impressive growth signals Brazil’s strengthened global connectivity and the enduring appeal of Rio as a world-class destination.

Direct Flight Between Rio and Montevideo Boosts Tourism

On Monday (16), Embratur President Marcelo Freixo celebrated these promising developments at Rio’s Galeão International Airport. He participated in the launch of the first direct flight between Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo, operated by the international carrier Sky Airline. The new route will operate four times weekly, potentially bringing 5,000 additional passengers to Rio each month.

“We are set to break all records, reaching US$ 7 billion in international tourism revenue. This means more jobs and income for our city, our state, and our country,” said Freixo.
