Starting April 10, 2025, travelers from the United States, Canada, and Australia will once again need a visa to enter Brazil. The Brazilian government has reinstated this requirement as part of its diplomatic reciprocity policy after negotiations for visa exemptions with these countries failed to reach a mutual agreement.
Electronic Visa Process for Tourists
The new visa system for tourists from these three countries will be fully electronic, eliminating the need for in-person visits to a Brazilian consulate. The application process is designed to be streamlined, with approvals typically processed within five business days, though in some cases, visas may be issued in less than 24 hours.
Once approved, the visa will be sent via email, which travelers must print and present upon entry into Brazil. The fee for the electronic visa is set at $80.90 per applicant.
Why Is Brazil Reinstating Visa Requirements?
In 2019, Brazil had waived visa requirements for citizens of the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Japan in an effort to boost tourism. However, since Brazil did not receive reciprocal treatment—meaning Brazilian travelers still required visas to visit the U.S., Canada, and Australia—the country decided to reinstate the visa requirement for these nations.
Japan remains an exception, as the two countries have successfully negotiated a mutual visa exemption agreement, leading to increased tourism between Brazil and Japan.
