Brazil's Lençóis Maranhenses Park a UNESCO'S World Heritage Site

Located in the state of Maranhão in northeastern Brazil, Lençóis Maranhenses is a breathtaking national park known for its vast white sand dunes and crystal-clear lagoons. Covering over 155,000 hectares, this unique landscape resembles a surreal desert, where seasonal rainwater creates striking lagoons against the pristine white sands.

Situated about 250 kilometers from São Luís, the state capital, the park has been a protected area for over 40 years due to its significant ecological and geological features. It provides a crucial habitat for various endangered species and exemplifies extraordinary natural beauty.

Recently, Lençóis Maranhenses achieved a significant milestone by being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This esteemed recognition underscores the park’s exceptional universal value and its contribution to global natural heritage. The designation acknowledges not only its stunning beauty but also its geological importance and biodiversity.

UNESCO’s accolade highlights the park as Brazil’s eighth World Heritage Site, joining the ranks of other iconic locations like the Amazon and Iguaçu Falls.

In addition, Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen recently fulfilled her dream of visiting Lençóis Maranhenses and has shared her stunning photos of the landscape.
