The History and Impact of Rock in Rio

From Vision to Global Phenomenon Conceived by Brazilian entrepreneur Roberto Medina in 1985, Rock in Rio quickly became a landmark event, initially drawing over 1.4 million people with performances from legends like Queen and Iron Maiden. The festival’s success spurred its international expansion, with iterations in Lisbon, Madrid, and Las Vegas, transforming it into a global brand synonymous with musical diversity and cultural celebration.

Cultural and Musical Diversity Rock in Rio has evolved beyond its rock origins to include a wide array of musical genres, reflecting the eclectic tastes of its global audience. This inclusivity extends to the festival’s layout, which features areas dedicated to dance music, local favela beats, and international acts, ensuring a rich tapestry of sounds and experiences.

Commitment to Sustainability and Social Responsibility The festival has been a pioneer in promoting sustainability and social responsibility through its “For a Better World” campaign, showcasing its commitment to more than just entertainment but also to making a positive impact on society and the environment.

As Rock in Rio turns 40, it celebrates not just a history of spectacular music but also a legacy of innovation, diversity, and social consciousness that continues to resonate across the globe.
